Sunrise and Flowers

Here are a couple from this morning on Muskegon Lake – as well as Susie’s lovely gift for hosting the West Michigan Herb Society Potluck on Tuesday.

Snow!

What was supposed to be a cold, clear morning became increasingly cloudy on the walk to the river.

And then, while heading back to Muskegon…the first snowflakes of the year!

Hate it when this happens.

On Monday, an early start and the extra miles were supposed to mean a sunrise over the Muskegon River from the old railroad bridge near the Causeway.

The walk couldn’t have been nicer, but the grand plan went astray when clouds moved in just as the sun was scheduled to make its entrance.

What a shame to have to try again next week.

Froze out on the trail, December 29, 2008

This leaf was frozen to the walkway of Muskegon’s Lakeshore Bike Trail near the Cobb plant. The ice crystals gave it a really pretty fossilized effect.

Just a few steps farther along, this berry was equally chilly, but was still a really gorgeous red.

Muskegon River Railroad Bridge

This is a little railroad bridge that can be seen from the Lakeshore Bike Trail. If you’re heading north, it’s visible as you pass over the South Branch of the Muskegon River just before you come to the B.C. Cobb plant.

All of the moisture that we have seen this summer is having an impact on so many things in our area – both small and large. From the perceived increase in the number of mosquitoes to the quickly rising water level of Lake Michigan.

This latter has been most welcome and almost shocking in its speed. The big lake is up over eight inches over the last year. For those unfortunates who are not familiar with our “inland ocean” that may be unimpressive, but those who are lucky enough to live around here know better.

To better put those inches in perspective, The Chicago Tribune figures that it means we are now enjoying the view of an additional 3.12 trillion gallons of water during our beach walks.
